ASD-STAN D02 Group on HVDC

Current tendencies on aircraft equipment’s electrification (e.g. bleedless, starter APU) and urban air mobility (Air Taxi concept) and in general, the aim to replace hydraulic systems by electric and hybrid-electric propulsion, brought the importance of creating a specific group working on HVDC within ASD-STAN Electrical domain. The perimeter covers voltages ranging from 270VDC to 1500VDC (E-FanX sur BAE 146), which contain also the 800VDC (City Airbus, PopUp). We can distinguish flat HVDC and modulated HVDC (PWM). Starting from 270VDC, the potential gradient is already not negligible to the components.

The strategy of implementation of these new systems and further development of associated components must be defined.

Convener: Christian Donadille, Airbus, France

Scope of the D02 Group on HVDC

The group defines the strategy and the standardization activities related to the use of HVDC for applications in aircrafts and aerospace constructions, which will be handled by the different working groups of ASD-STAN/D02 Electrical domain.

Objectives

  • To establish European standards that will reduce the risks associated with the use of such voltages;
  •  To set the priorities of standardization activities to be undertaken by the different working groups of ASD-STAN/D02 Electrical concerned by HVDC (e.g. ASD-STAN/D02/WG01 Electrical network, ASD-STAN/D02/WG02 Cables and stripping tools, ASD-STAN/D02/WG03 Elements of connections, ASD-STAN/D02/WG05 Protection devices, ASD-STAN/D02/WG08 Installation technologies).
  • To create synergies between the different working groups of ASD-STAN/D02 Electrical domain.
  • To create synergies/liaisons between ASD-STAN/D02 and SAE groups.

Liaisons

– SAE AE-8A Installation
– SAE AE-8D Wiring
– SAE AE-8B Protective devices
– SAE AE-C1 Connectors
– SAE AE-9 Materials
– SAE AE-7 Electrical power & equipment

Participation

The HVDC group is restricted to OEMs, TC holders and System designers.

Meetings

The group will meet quarterly.

Working Groups of D02

D02/WG01 Electrical Network

Convener: Paul Miller, Rolls Royce, UK
Secretariat: ASD-STAN

WG Scope
The Domain D02 Working Group WG01 represents interests for the European standardization activities in the field of “Electrical Network” for aerospace applications. It defines the requirements for Characteristics of Aircraft Electrical Supplies, Aircraft Electrical Power Systems, Testing Methods for Aircraft Wiring systems, Electrical Bonding methods of aircraft structures and equipment, as well as Electrical System Load Analysis documents. In addition it is the focal point for the standards activities supporting the up to multi-kV future electrical power systems that are envisaged for aircraft propulsion.

It prepares ASD-STAN prEN standards, EN-standardization projects and comments as well as participates in other European and International projects. It has responsibility for European Norms such as:
EN 2282 Characteristics of Aircraft Electrical Supplies
EN 2283 Testing Methods for Aircraft Wiring
– Etc.

The D02/WG01 provides interested stakeholders the opportunity to actively work on standardization procedures, contribute their ideas and suggestions and take part in the information exchange between national experts.

D02/WG02 Cables & Stripping Tools

Convener: Pierre Baéna, Airbus, France.
Secretariat: Philippe Thomas, BNAE, France

WG Scope
The Domain D02 / Working WG02 Group represents interests for the European standardization activities in the field of ” Wires and Cables and associated stripping tools” for aerospace applications. It prepares ASD-STAN prEN standards, EN-standardization projects and comments as well as participates in other European and International projects. It keeps updated the current approved EN standards and seeks continuously for new project to standardize new products, test methods and/or tooling for future aerospace needs.

As an example (but not limited to), the Working Group is the owner of the EN3475-xxx test method series on top of wires/cables standard products. The D02/WG02 provides interested stakeholders the opportunity to actively work on standardization procedures, contribute their ideas and suggestions and take part in the information exchange between national experts.

D02/WG12 MOAA Modular & Open Avionics Architecture

Convener: Martin Theodor GANGKOFER, ESG, Germany
Secretariat: Judith Mengel, DIN, Germany

WG Scope
For ASD-STAN Working group D02/WG12 “Modular and Open Avionics Architectures (MOAA)” the standardization of the integrated modular Avionics architectures (IMA) is the priority objective. The project ASAAC (Allied Standard Avionics Architecture Council) – a tri-lateral research- and technology project from Germany, France and Greece – was one of the most important projects for the development and validation of the efficiency of IMA-architectures international until 2004. Standards and corresponding guidelines of an open Avionics architecture on the basis of integrated modular Avionics were defined and documented. These documents were converted into European Standards and NATO STANAGs. Current field of activity is the maintenance of the EN 4660 series (Aerospace series – Modular and Open Avionics Architectures).
